Top 15 Best Selling Luxury Vehicles In America January 2015

As it ended 2014, so it began 2015: the BMW 3-Series and its 4-Series offshoot formed Americas best-selling luxury auto lineup in January 2015. Outsold by 779 units was Americas top-selling luxury utility vehicle, the Lexus RX.

The RX achieved a 17% year-over-year improvement despite sitting alongside a newer, more affordable competitor in its own showroom. Lexus also sold 2812 copies of the NX in January. Together, the RX and NX accounted for four out of every ten Lexus sales last month.

Only two of Americas top 15 best-selling luxury nameplates reported year-over-year declines in January. Both those vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Cadillac SRX, are in the midst of downward trending streaks. E-Class sales have tumbled in six consecutive months. The SRXs January drop was its seventh in a row.

Mercedes-Benz was, however, Americas leading luxury auto brand in January. Lexus trailed the three-pointed star by 1488 sales.

For the purposes of the above list, premium brands include Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volvo. Brands like Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Lotus dont report specific monthly sales data. Bentley and Maserati only report brand totals. Buick has been excluded with a bunch of other automakers that dont sell vehicles with base prices higher than $40K.

$45,000 USD (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, adding approximately $15,000 to the average new car transaction price seemed like a fitting place to begin. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $45,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of the second list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $32,750, as would be the case with the new BMW 320i, which costs less than a Honda Accord V6 Touring. The biggest problem with a $45,000 minimum price of entry? Cars like the Cadillac XTS, which starts at $44,660.
* BMW USA, not GoodCarBadCar, has chosen to combine sales of the 3-Series and 4-Series. GCBC combines sales of the Audi A4 and Audi A4 Allroad. None-Allroad sales were down 29% to 1563 in January.
Cadillacs new CTS - 1698 January sales - starts at $45,100, but the lingering CTS Coupe is a sub-$40K car, and the wagon starts at $42,195.

Canadian pickup truck sales jumped 12% to nearly 22,000 units in February 2015, a gain of 2285 sales compared with February 2014.

Full-size truck volume rose 10% to 20,578, equal to 93.6% of the overall pickup truck market. The best-selling Ford F-Series earned 38.6% of the full-size markets sales, down from 42% in February 2014 as its 1% gain trailed the faster-growing nameplates in the full-size category.

General Motors full-size twins, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, combined to outsell the Ram P/U by 300 units after the Ram outsold the GM twins by 1113 units in January 2015.

Canadian sales of small/midsize pickup trucks jumped 45% to 1410 units in February 2015. GMs new twins, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, combined to outsell the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma by 84 units last month.

Sporty Car Sales In America December 2014 Year End

In 2014, for the fifth consecutive year, General Motors sold more Chevrolet Camaros in the United States than Ford sold Mustangs. The gap expanded slightly but remained slim: just 3662 units, up from 3381 units in 2013.

But the Mustang, buoyed by a new generation that became available toward the end of the year, was the dominant muscle car during the latter part of 2014, outselling the Camaro in November and December by wide margins.

But December was a strong month for their segment overall, as the Mustangs 66% year-over-year improvement partnered with the Dodge Challengers 72% leap and the 32% jump in Camaro sales. Dodge needed best-ever December sales for the Challenger to record its sixth consecutive year-over-year year-end improvement in 2014, and demand for the Challenger did indeed reach that level. The trio combined for a 55% improvement last month, equal to 7463 units.

The Camaro was Americas 26th-best-selling car in calendar year 2014; the Mustang 29th; the Challenger 45th. In December, the Mustang ranked 21st; the Camaro 31st; the Challenger 42nd.

For every 11 Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers sold in America in 2014, consumers also picked up one 4C, TT, Z4, F-Type, SLK, Boxster, or Cayman. This group of European sports cars combined for a marginal 0.2% improvement in 2014 thanks almost completely to the F-Type. Sales of the soon-to-be-replaced TT slid 44%, the Z4 was down 13%, the SLK slid slightly, and the Boxster/Cayman duo fell 8%.

Subarus Impreza-based WRX/STi lineup outsold Subarus BRZ and its twin, the Scion FR-S, by 3926 units. Lexus sold their first 1922 RCs in the final two months of 2014. Volkswagens Golf-based GTI shot up 30%, year-over-year. BMW reported 555 i8 sales. Viper volume rose to the highest level in six years, yet it wasnt high enough.

But 2014 was the year of the Corvette. 34,839 copies of Chevrolets iconic sports car were sold to Americans last year, the highest total since 2006, more than the number of 4Cs, TTs, Z4s, F-Types, SLKs, Boxsters, Caymans, R8s, ELRs, GT-Rs, 911s, and Vipers combined.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we dont know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. The BMW 6-Series has been removed from the premium list because we dont use this space as a showcase for sedans (unless automakers release data for high-end sporting models like the Lexus ISF, as Toyota Canada does) and the 6-Series lineup now relies heavily on a sedan variant. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in 2014 were 1224, 2100, 708, 172, and 900, respectively. Tesla, unfortunately, doesnt release model-specific monthly U.S. sales data, but HybridCars.com estimates 1900 December Tesla sales, 16,550 in 2014.
